Essential Family Services LLC FAQ

At Essential Family Services LLC, we want to make sure you're completely satisfied in choosing us to work with you, your child, or your loved one. Have an in-home care provider-related question? We have the answer. Check out these FAQs and give us a call today for more information!

  • Where are you located?

    We're located at 355 Crawford Street, Suites 800 and 806, Portsmouth , VA 23704.

  • What services do you provide?

We support adults and children with intellectual and mental disabilities. We also assist individuals with becoming more independent and self-sufficient.

  • We are looking for services for my child or someone else with a developmental disability. Who should I call?

Please call Renee at (757) 606-2117.

  • How does Essential Family Services get paid for their services?

We are a Medicaid Waiver Provider, meaning that we accept federal and state funds designed to help people live independently in the community as payment for our services. Currently, we are only accepting the Intellectual Disability (ID) waiver. For more information on Virginia's requirements, visit the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Services.

  • What's the difference between group home and Essential Family Services?

We provide the same services as a group home, except we provide them in the person's own home or apartment. This gives our clients independence, freedom, and the privacy they want, without compromising their safety.

  • Is serving people in their own homes more expensive than group homes?

It seems like it would be, but in fact, it's considerably less expensive. Part of the reason we're able to do what we do is that every person we support has his or her name on the lease, which entitles him or her to benefits (such as section eight housing vouchers, fuel subsidies, and food stamps) that are not available to those living in a group home.

Besides, group homes are staffed to meet the highest levels of need, even though those needs may vary considerably among a group, as well as throughout the day. Here we provide as much or as little support as each need, and only when they need or want it.
